Taira no Masakado (平 将門) was a samurai of the Heian period who is currently a vengeful spirit. In the Len'en Project, he is revered as the True Emperor and has a cult of following.

Background Information[edit]

Taira no Masakado was a samurai of the Heian period who led a rebellion against the central government of Kyoto. He was born either in the late 800s or early 900s CE and was killed in 940. After his death, his spirit is said to have returned as a vengeful ghost and brought destruction across the country. Along with Emperor Sutoku and Sugawara no Michizane, he is one of the "Three Great Vengeful Spirits of Japan" (日本三大怨霊, Nihon San Dai Onryō).

Apparently, Masakado has a cult of following in the Capital City, where his followers claim that he was the True Emperor of the capital and by extension, Mugenri. One of these followers was Taira no Iwakado, who wanted to resurrect him and was even willing to use his grandchild, Taira no Fumikado, for his plans. He used a body from an oni that he hunted with Fumikado's blood, adding the vital energy and some special qualities from a lot of other living things to manufacture a new life-form. Grateful for taking care of them, Fumikado agreed to take part in those experiments and even transferred their soul to the homunculus. The only thing left was to transfer Masakado's soul, but an important partner was killed by anti-Masakado's forces, so Fumikado with their new body had to abandon the capital.

Reactivate Majestical Imperial

Fumikado decides to take advantage of the abundance of spirits in Reactivate Majestical Imperial for their ceremony, when they plan to revive the soul of Taira no Masakado and transfer his soul to their body. They ally with Fujiwara no Iyozane and hires Tsugumi Umatachi, an acquaintance from the Capital City. They're tasked with using their powers to herd the spirits and guide them to where Fumikado is making their resurrection ceremony. Unfortunately for their plans, Tsugumi and Iyozane are defeated by the heroes and the latter confesses about Fumikado's plans. The heroes go to the resurrection ceremony in order to stop Fumikado, who is upset that their lackeys have failed their mission and there are no spirits. After their defeat at the hands of the heroes, Fumikado reveals that their plan didn't work because despite the power of the Saeda, the spirits are being attracted to another location, which happens to be the Withered Grove, where the Harujion is.

Brilliant Pagoda or Haze Castle

In Brilliant Pagoda or Haze Castle, because Fumikado's ritual failed and since the Dragonfly Castle has appeared to welcome someone else who is more fitted to be the Emperor, most of Masakado's followers have dissipated.

Masakado has a number of followers, particularly Taira no Fumikado and Taira no Iwakado who wanted to use his grandchild's body as a vessel for Masakado. Kujiru Kesa and Kaisen Azuma were his former followers.
