??? Race Units

From Len'en Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Book of the Cafe features a group of combat units under the "???" race previously unseen in the series. This page lists all such units in this race, with the exception of the two types of ink cores (large ink cores & ink birds) and tri-elements, which have been seen in previous entries in the series (although the ink bird was unused in Evanescent Existence, the unit's "Appearances" section lists the game among their appearances anyways.).

General Information[edit | edit source]

List of Elements
Red [Fire/Flames] Red [Fire/Flames] Cyan [Water/Ice] Cyan [Water/Ice]
Yellow [Lightning/Thunder] Yellow [Lightning/Thunder] Brown [Earth/Metal] Brown [Earth/Metal]
Green [Wind/Explosion] Green [Wind/Explosion] Purple [Spirit/Illusion] Purple [Spirit/Illusion]
White [Light/Divine] White [Light/Divine] Black [Darkness/Nether] Black [Darkness/Nether]
Blank [Null] Blank [Null]

Most units in the "???" race are tools that seem to be able to move of their own volition, which can be both obtained and used by the player and encountered as stage enemies. They all feature an eye that looks similar to an Eye of Senri on their bodies, which moves as if it were a real eye. This is possibly the zero base core used in their creation, as they are the "central component of a unit".[1] Due to the nature of Book of the Cafe's story, it is unclear whether these creatures exist in any capacity in the reality of the Len'en Project.

Each of these units follows a certain naming convention, "Name of Unit [Element]". While not every type of unit has more than one elemental variation, they are nevertheless labelled with the element section in their names as well. Each element is named as "Colour [Attribute1/Attribute2]" (with the exception of the Blank element in the English translation, which only has one attribute: Null). Each unit species uses one of the three parameters to display its unit elemental variations. For example, the causality-severing steels use attribute 2, with "Causality-Severing Steel [Flame]" belonging to the Red [Fire/Flames] element; while the hammers of sealing use colour, with "Hammer of Sealing [Black]" belonging to the Black [Darkness/Nether] element.

Causality-severing steels (因果を断つ鋼, Inga wo Tatsu Hagane) are, presumably, steel swords with an eye on their hilt.

Design

With the exception of the [Null] variant, the kanji found in the unit's name (因果断鋼) are found on the blade itself from the tip to the hilt, separated in the middle by the symbol of the blade's element. When spell casting, it can be seen that the blade's hilt flips about like a book's pages, although it's not clear what it actually is.

The term kakushitsu (確執) refers to "being persistent in one's own views, or the discord/antagonism caused by such persistence"; while kyoutan (凶弾) refers specifically to "bullet(s) fired by an evil person", typically used in the context of assassinations, murders, etc.

Design

The design of the guns heavily resembles of the MP5 submachine guns, with an eye on the receiver of the gun, above the magazine. On the magazine itself is the symbol for the unit's element. All variations of the unit are physically identical, with the exception of the elemental symbol and their colour, which are as bellow:

  • [Earth] Variant: Brown in colour.
  • [Wind] Variant: White in colour.
  • [Light] Variant: Green in colour.

While not explicitly stated, the use of the kanji for hammer (, tsuchi) with the metal radical () indicates that at least the head of the hammer is made of metal.

Design

With the exception of the [Blank] variant, every hammer features its respective elemental symbol on its poll and a traditional Japanese pattern (和柄, wagara) on the cheek of the hammer.

  • [Cyan] Variant: Blue Ocean Wave Pattern (青海波, Seigaiha).
  • [Brown] Variant: Checkerboard Pattern (市松, Ichimatsu).
  • [Black] Variant: Arrow Feather Pattern (矢羽, Yabane).
