Title Screen

Arawa de nai sato e
To the Land Hidden Outside Reality ~ chain link?[a]

This is the theme for the opening menu.
It's the first song you'll hear after booting up the game,
so I put roughly 2% more gusto into it than usual,
but in practice, it's actually really hard to come up with a fitting opening song.
I tried to aim for a song that's "a taste of Japanese-style that's full of energy",
but when I think about whether or not I was able to express that well...
As a creator, I feel that I'm about to lose energy... (lol)

Stage 1 - Dimensional Cave's theme

Ekizochikku kurisutaru
Exotic Crystal

This is the stage 1 theme.
I wanted to make a mysterious sounding song, and this is the result.
It has a feeling of going forth undauntedly into an unknown land,
and it sets you up for the many difficulties that are about to unfold...
I wonder what sort of exotic materials you could mine in the Dimensional Cave?
Well, I think it's quite fitting for a stage one theme.

Stage 1 boss - Kurohebi's theme

メラニンインブラック ~ Colt_Snake
Meranin in burakku
Melanin in Black ~ Colt Snake[b]

This is the theme of the stage 1 boss, Kurohebi.
I tried to make a song that's both light and thrilling.
Stage one bosses have a strong underdog image,
so frankly their themes can be any kind of song at all. (lol)
However, because anything could work, I couldn't figure out what I should do.
In the end, I made a "song where I wasn't thinking of anything in particular",
and so resultingly I'm perfectly satisfied with it. (Seriously?)
And look, some of the letters are wrong so it's all good.

At any rate, this isn't where Kurohebi's going to have their time to shine.

Stage 2 - Spacetime Whirlpool's theme

錨さえ揺蕩ふ趨勢 ~ Lost_Anchorage
Ikarisae tayutafu sūsei
Tendency That Sways Even Anchors ~ Lost Anchorage

This is the stage 2 theme.
You drift on and on under the ocean,
and entrust yourself to the flow of spacetime, floating and sinking as you wish.
That's the kind of song I wanted to make, but it ended up like this.
It has a mysterious quality to it, but is this really okay?

Stage 2 boss - Aoji Shitodo's theme

Let's Joke!
Kakuhansuru gōtai kongō
Churning Solid Diamond ~ Let's Joke!

This is the theme of the stage 2 boss, Aoji.
It's a song that flows forward without ever stabilizing.
I thought I was being pretty "sharp", but maybe it ended up falling "flat"?
Perhaps this isn't my "forte", but still, I won't "fret" about it.
...I'm terribly sorry, that was awful.
Well the song is just a joke itself, so it should be fine?
Outrageous song descriptions like this, I mean.

Stage 3 - The Corridor's theme

Ekisutora maindo
Extra Mind

I wanted to make something really computer-ish, but, well...
By the way, the stage isn't inside cyberspace or anything like that.
I'm not talented enough so it ended up being an incomplete combustion song.
I definitely want to try redoing it someday.
But I don't know when I'll get around to it... Hm...
Anyway, I wonder what kind of landmines those are in Mindsweeper?
Perhaps PMN-2?[c]
...Except it's actually called Minesweeper, 'mam!

You see, I'm in perfect form today, too.

Stage 3 boss - Tsubakura Enraku's (Tsurubami Senri) theme

インディスワールド ~ Monochrome_eye
In disu wārudo
In This World ~ Monochrome eye

This is Tsubakura Enraku's theme.
They're kind of a really important character (or in other words, a main character),
and so I tried making a mysterious song for them.
Or so I was expecting, but it ended up being excessively cool for some reason.
In this game, it's actually (omitted) who you're fighting, so in a way, poor Tsubakura got their song stolen.
(↑For now the spoilers will be censored.)
There are even two or three rejected songs I made for them but which didn't quite fit.
I'd really like to use those rejected songs somewhere, though... I wonder where I'll use them.[d]

Stage 3 boss - Yabusame Houlen's theme

時空を越える翼 〜 M_theory
Jikū wo koeru tsubasa
Wings That Transcend Spacetime ~ M theory[e]

Yabusame Houlen's theme.
They're one of the main characters, and so I wanted to make an eerie song for them,
and as expected I made an eerie song.
I wonder if you can glimpse the idiocy inside the eeriness?
It's a song full of both energy and creepiness.

Stage 4 - Hooaka's Space's theme

Iteyurumu wa shimikōru kokoro
The Frozen Heart is What Has Thawed

The stage 4 theme.
It's a song that goes from being quiet to up-tempo all at once.
It's a song that never calms down. just like Hooaka themself.
I made the first half, not with an image of a beautiful snowy landscape,
but rather with that of frozen ground that has a dangerous smell, but I wonder how it turned out?
The hot air comes blowing in.

Stage 4 boss - Hooaka Shitodo's theme

〜 Soul_Dualism
Ea masutā
Air Master! ~ Soul Dualism

This is the theme of the stage 3[sic] boss, Hooaka.
Your cheeks always turn red when you're out in the cold,
but Hooaka's cheeks aren't red at all. At least as long as they're sober.
They have a reputation for being able to understand the mood in the air, a so-called Air Master.[f]
No, actually, the song's name comes from their ability. Really, I swear.

Stage 5 - Tower that Births and Consumes the Sun's theme

Itsuwari, makoto wo hyōri agu
The Untruth Patronizes the Truth[g]

This is the stage 5 theme.
The title is pronounced "itsuwari, makoto wo hyouri agu".
Anyone who actually understands it must be really amazing!
The song is based on the image of the boss of the stage as well.
At any rate, the stage itself seems to be influenced by them.
It has an atmosphere of flying through the clouds and beyond the sky, doesn't it?
It's the late game, so the excitement really starts to build here.

Stage 5 boss - Kuroji Shitodo's theme

Endo obu hisutorī
End of History

This is the theme of the stage 5 boss, Kuroji Shitodo.
I meant to finish this song with an empty bravado containing sorrow.
It also ended up a little cute, but the character really isn't cute at all.
It was a fun song to make, though.
It might be fun to perform this in a group. The percussion is really tight~.

Ah, the song's name isn't based on a beer or anything. Most definitely not.[h]
I definitely don't want a drink!
Ohh~, beer is scary, beer is scary.

Final Stage - The Sun that Casts a Shadow's theme

Tanagokoro no ue no hikari
A Star's Light in the Palm of One's Hand[i]

This is the stage 6 theme.
As the stage itself is short, the song also became short by necessity,
but I wonder if you can even call this a song?
It's like some drunkard is performing music on the street.
Well as long as a feeling of sickness is seeping out of it, I say it's fine.

Final Stage boss - Clause's theme

エンパイアパワー 〜 Eternal_Force
Empaia pawā
Empire Power ~ Eternal Force

This is the theme of the last boss, (omitted) Clause (omitted).
I wanted it to express a feeling of sickness no matter what,
so I naturally imagined using a piano solo,
but looking back on it, why did I think that?
After that, I also did some practice making synth electric guitars.
I made three different kinds, but can you tell them apart?
Somehow it resembles something from a horizontal shooter.

Incidentally, It seems that I'm no good at making this kind of character,
so maybe Clause won't show up again after this...
But they already have a role to play, so they'll have to eventually show up at least once more...
Seriously, they're such a nuisance. (Woah!)

Yabusame Houlen's Extra stage - Shrine Road's theme

Hōsū tenpon
Phoenix Chick's Heavenly Rush

This is the theme for Yabusame's Extra stage.
The Japanese title is pronounced "hou-suu-ten-pon",
but it's not an actual word. (probably)
It sounds kind of like the name of a yaku in mahjong. Dora-dora.
I based this song on an image of Yabusame too.
Or rather, maybe it's an image of "Yabusame and Mugenri"?
Did you expect it to be a calm and gentle song?
Too bad, it's actually just another idiot song!
As if you can go anywhere, flying on your wings...
That's the vibe, I think?
Well, the important thing is that they're a willful and reckless person.

Tsubakura Enraku's Extra stage[j] - Shrine Road's theme

Furuku museru kioku
Old Stifled Memories ~ BEGAN

This is the theme for Tsubakura Enraku's Extra stage.
Unlike Yabusame's version, despite being up-tempo,
it has a dark and lonely ambience overall, doesn't it?
It seems like the sort of atmosphere that would play in a town in an RPG, which is great.
Tsubakura has very strong connections to Mugenri,
but that won't be explained here.
Perhaps these things will be explained as the series progresses.
The "reverse" will be "clarified", after all.[k]

Extra stage boss - Tsurubami Senri's theme

永劫舞踏機関 〜 Shall_We_Dance!!
Eigō butō kikan
Eternal Dance Engine[l] ~ Shall We Dance!!

This is the theme of Tsurubami Senri, the Extra boss.
It's got a "Let's dance, shall we?! *swoosh*" kind of feeling.
If I tried to dance at this tempo, I'd definitely sprain my ankle or something.
So anyway, I really love fusion!
But I'm extremely doubtful wether this song could be considered fusion. (lol)
(↑Says the person who thinks "pokosuka pokosuka" is Latin.)
Jazz is really great for boss battles. So is progressive rock, though!
I think this song is really well-polished, but what do you think?
I'd really love to try to perform it myself.

Ending theme

翳み逝く現実 〜 human_VISION
Kasumimi yuku genjitsu
Fading Reality ~ human VISION

This is the ending theme.
It's extremely short and dull, so it's a rather lonely song.
Overall, it's quite dark... Really now, it must have been influenced by a certain head priest.
The endings are so short, I decided not to strain my nerves for this one.
It took me the least time of any song in the game, maybe only 20 minutes?
Honestly, I put more effort into the ending drawings than this.

Staff Roll theme

散り佚す夢幻 〜 bard_VISION
Chiri itsusu mugen
Dissipating Fantasies ~ bard VISION

This is the song that plays during the staff roll.
It's an arrangement of a song from a long time ago,
but now it's completely different from what it was before I arranged it. (lol)
The staff roll is really short (because there's so few staff),
so it was tough to get the music to fit alongside the screen...

The plot in the game is all foreshadowing, so you really can't understand much,
but from here on out, I'm going to make stories both before and after this,
so don't think too deeply about the story, and just have fun. ♪ (That's not something you should say at the end.)

Notes[edit | edit source]

  1. The title uses the "arawa" reading for the 現 kanji rather than the more common "utsutsu". This possibly stems from clarified (, arawa) or the verb reveal (現れる, arawareru). 現で无い can therefore be read as both "not real" and "not exposed". In addition, the kanji used are the same as in the spelling for Mugenri (无現里).
  2. Melanin, Greek for "black" or "dark", is a kind of biological pigment. Colt Snake is a reference to a line of guns made by the manufacturer Colt.
  3. PMN-2 is a kind of Russian landmine.
  4. One of them was later used in Brilliant Pagoda or Haze Castle as one of the Neutral route stage themes.
  5. M-theory is a variation of string theory which attempts to unify the principles of its other variations.
  6. In Japanese, the phrase kuuki wo yomu (空気を読む) means to read or understand the mood of a situation, although it literally means to read the air. Thus Hooaka's ability to read situations and their ability to control the air are linked.
  7. The phrase hyouri agu, or to patronize, means to appear to praise something but to actually be condescending towards it. The Japanese phrase also uses the kanji for "front" and "back", which may have some relevance to Kuroji and their ability.
  8. "The End of History" is a type of beer by the Scottish brewery BrewDog.
  9. Rather than using "hoshi" (star) for the 星 kanji, the furigana given in the YouTube upload is "hikari" - light ().
  10. Also used for Suzumi Kuzu's Extra Stage in v1.10a onwards.
  11. This phrase uses the kanji in the name of the Senri Shrine. Senri literally means "clarified reverse-side". Similar wording is used in Suzumi's unlock message.
  12. The phrasing of "Eternal [...] Engine" (永劫機関) in Japanese is reminiscent of "perpetual motion machine" (永久機関), "engine" and "machine" coming from the same Japanese word.
For "eternal/perpetual" though, the song uses 永劫, which refers specifically to time, while the word for "perpetual motion machine" uses 永久, which could also denote infinity.
