Appearances

The leader of a powerful clan back in ancient Japan, who ruled over several states. They were murdered by rival clans and seven pieces of their body became the seven Adagumo siblings.

Background Information[edit | edit source]

They are based on Yamata no Orochi (八岐大蛇/八俣遠呂智), a monstrous eight-headed and eight-tailed serpent from Japanese mythology slain by the god Susanoo-no-Mikoto. The god gave the monster powerful alcohol in order to get it drunk, once he was completely drunk and fell asleep, Susanoo cut the serpent up. When cutting open his fourth tail, the god found the sacred Sword of Kusanagi inside the tail.

Backstory[edit | edit source]

In the Len'en Project, they were a leader of a powerful clan in ancient Japan which ruled over several states. During the clan's golden age, they were given the responsibility of guarding the sacred treasure Tasouken by the heavens. Other powerful clans and influential people were opposed to the clan, but did not dare challenge Orochi to a sword fight directly, fearing their power and skill with the sword. Instead, they threw a fake celebration for Orochi and offered them strong sake. Once Orochi was thoroughly drunk, they attacked the drunk chieftain and murdered them. Even in death, Orochi refused to let go of the Tasouken, prompting the others to cut off their arm. Seven pieces of their body transformed into orochi youkai, giving rise to the seven Adagumo siblings. Namely, Adagumo no Yaorochi from the severed sword-arm and Saragimaru from one of their eyes.

Taira no Masakado (平 将門) was a samurai of the Heian period who is currently a vengeful spirit. In the Len'en Project, he is revered as the True Emperor and has a cult of following.

Background Information[edit | edit source]

Taira no Masakado was a samurai of the Heian period who led a rebellion against the central government of Kyoto. He was born either in the late 800s or early 900s CE and was killed in 940. After his death, his spirit is said to have returned as a vengeful ghost and brought destruction across the country. Along with Emperor Sutoku and Sugawara no Michizane, he is one of the "Three Great Vengeful Spirits of Japan" (日本三大怨霊, Nihon San Dai Onryō).

Backstory[edit | edit source]

Apparently, Masakado has a cult of following in the Capital City, where his followers claim that he was the True Emperor of the capital and by extension, Mugenri. One of these followers was Taira no Iwakado, who wanted to resurrect him and was even willing to use his grandchild, Taira no Fumikado, for his plans. He used a body from an oni that he hunted with Fumikado's blood, adding the vital energy and some special qualities from a lot of other living things to manufacture a new life-form. Grateful for taking care of them, Fumikado agreed to take part in those experiments and even transferred their soul to the homunculus. The only thing left was to transfer Masakado's soul, but an important partner was killed by anti-Masakado's forces, so Fumikado with their new body had to abandon the capital.

Taira no Iwakado (平 厳門) was an enigmatic character known to have been Taira no Fumikado's grandfather. He was the one who raised Fumikado after their parents died during a political conflict. He also found the orphaned Taira no Chouki and raised them to become Fumikado's assistant.

General Information[edit | edit source]

Taira no Iwakado had a wish; to resurrect Taira no Masakado, the "True Emperor". As such, Fumikado sacrificed their body as an expression of gratitude to help him realize his wish. He used the body of a oni that he hunted and added to it Fumikado's blood, the vital energy and some special qualities from a lot of other living things to manufacture a new life-form and use it as a vessel. Since this new body was young and small, Iwakado transferred their own soul to it and kept stimulating, developing and training the flesh of the new life-form for many months and years. Unfortunately, when the vessel was completed, their grandfather was deceased and buried in a tomb.

Fumikado continues his plan with their fellows to become the emperor of Mugenri. He, along with the rest of his family, was close to Yago Ametsukana, who made them promise to ensure that Fumikado does become the new emperor.[2]

Tenkai's superiors[edit | edit source]

No image
Information
Species Human?
Occupation Barrier builders
Location Azumaterasu
Appearances

Tenkai Zuifeng has been stated to have people directly superior to them in the art of barrier crafting.[4] They often put Tenkai to work on barrier upkeep in order to both train them in barrier repairing and to damage their reputation. Before the events of Reactivate Majestical Imperial's Extra stage, they tasked Tenkai with repairing a part of Mugenri's internal barrier broken by Lumen Celeritas. This made the prodiguous apprentice arrange a small prank somehow related to said barrier for their superiors, the effects of which have yet to be seen.

Essentially nothing is known about them so far, other than the fact that they most likely work at Azumaterasu just like Tenkai.

Mitsumo and Terumi
Terumi (with Mitsumo) in Brilliant Pagoda or Haze Castle
Information
Species Human
Occupation Mitsumo's current vessel
Appearances

Terumi (輝美) was a young human child who was absorbed by the mirror youkai Mitsumo and serves as its current vessel.

General Information[edit | edit source]

It's unclear if they come from the Human Village or the Capital City. At some point, they were attacked and subsequently assimilated by the mirror youkai Mitsumo. Despite being used as a tool for transportation and communication by the youkai, Terumi's still just about conscious, but their eyes are lifeless. However, its implied that Mitsumo's vessels don't last long, so the youkai plans to discard them soon and find a new vessel.

Terumi's condition by the time of Brilliant Pagoda or Haze Castle is already bad, implying that they are on the verge of death (presumably from a combination of exhaustion, dehydration and starvation). However, Mitsumo continues to animate their body in order to talk and move around. According to Shion, they smell like rotten meat, which means that Terumi's body already started to decompose.

Background Information[edit | edit source]

Name

Their full name is Terumi (輝美), which contains kanji that means "bright" and "beautiful" respectively. The hiragana was not presented in the demo version of Brilliant Pagoda or Haze Castle to indicate the pronunciation. JynX was asked this on Twitter on 12 June 2015, and thus rectified this in the full version. The kanji in Terumi's name were chosen as they could also be read as "kagami" (), Japanese for "mirror".[5]

Design

Terumi has short purple hair and empty purple eyes. They wear a short pink tattered kimono and are barefooted. They wear a small mirror resembling Mitsumo as a hair accessory. Their eyes are lifeless, indicating Mitsumo's control over them.

Chouki's Burabura[edit | edit source]

Chouki's burabura

Information
Species Youkai (Shikigami)
Occupation Chouki's shikigami; Formerly Garaiya's shikigami
Appearances

Taira no Chouki's burabura (不螺々々) is a lantern-shaped youkai serving Chouki as their shikigami, helping them speak.

General Information[edit | edit source]

The burabura used to be one of Garaiya Ogata's shikigami, having the ability to "light the fire of one's inner voice", used to communicate across long distances. Garaiya gave it to Chouki after the later started training under the former to make up for Chouki's lost voice, helping relay Chouki's thoughts to the outside world.

The burabura works by directly translating the users thoughts into words, so it makes it difficult to hide one's emotions or lie effectively. Additionally, the burabura is also known to act on its own, saying the wrong things.

Background Information[edit | edit source]

Origin

The burabura is based on a youkai of the same name, but written with different kanji, the burabura (不落不落・不落々々, lit. "unfalling"). This burabura is a youkai featured in the 18th century ukiyo-e artist Toriyama Sekien's The Idle Bag of One Hundred Housewares (百器徒然袋). In the book, it is depicted as a lantern tied to a bamboo stick, with a single mouth and an eye, the candle acting as its tongue. According to Toriyama's commentary, the burabura is potentially just Kitsunebi (狐火, lit. "fox fire") as seen from a distance, which are atmospheric ghost lights said to be the creation or disguise of youkai foxes. Other than this, not much else it known about the burabura.

There are no other evidence for the idea of the burabura youkai outside of this text, so it is possible that Toriyama simply invented the youkai. Nowadays, it is often considered a type paper lantern ghost (提灯お化け, chōchin-obake), which is in turn considered a tsukumogami, a type of youkai born of an object gaining its own spirit through having existed for 100 years, though it's unclear whether if the burabura belongs to this category or not.

Name

The burabura doesn't have a name, but is simply referred to as the burabura (不螺々々, lit. "not spiral shell"). It is possible that this is simply a typo of 不落々々.

Design

The burabura appears to be a dark red paper lantern with a single large eye and horn. It has a mouth across the lantern's center, which appears to have fire within.

The first head priest of the Senri Shrine is among the group that created Mugenri and is said to have been immensely powerful.[6] Their successor, on the other hand, introduced the spell card system.[7] Haiji is a big fan of the latter.[8] Details on the third known priest are unspecified, but Tsurubami Senri is seemingly on par with either them or the second in terms of power.[6]

It's unknown how many more held the position of head priest between the three and Tsurubami.
