Hibaru's Theme Name[edit source]
A Google search fueled by curiosity led me to the expression "見切り千両、損切り万両", which seems to be what the name is referencing. Unfortunately, while I was able to find an explanation for its meaning, all the results were in Japanese, and I don't exactly have the skill to read and comprehend large quantities of text, so I haven't got the slightest idea what it could mean. If anyone else can figure it out, though, we might find ourselves retranslating the theme name yet again. ――Popfan (talk/contribs) 19:22, 5 November 2017 (UTC)
- I had a look around, and I found this site [[1]] that discusses the phrase you referenced in more detail. It appears to be a phrase used in the Japanese stock market, and it means something like this:
- Selling your stocks at a loss/at a bargain-basement price is worth an arbitrary amount [1000 ryo], but cutting your losses (and selling your stocks before they get too low) is worth 10 times that (10000 ryo).
- I'm going off on a tangent here, but I think it's worth mentioning that 見切り is often used together with 二束三文 (e.g. 二束三文に見切って売る - "It was sold [for a loss] at a dirt-cheap price"). 二束三文 also appears in the title of Hibaru's first theme.
- Putting that aside, I'm not sure how to incorporate 目玉 into this. One interpretation of that word is 'special feature/drawcard' so perhaps we can read it in the following way:
- Selling your stocks at a loss is worth 1000 ryo, but having something really special on display is worth 10000 ryo
- Of course, there's still the reference to the 4 eyes on Hibaru's back to consider, too. I've thrown a lot of ideas out there, but I hope it helps us get closer to a more accurate translation of the theme's name...! Releska (talk) 07:42, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
Garaiya's Theme Name[edit source]
I just did a bit more research on the meaning of 見参, and I'm pretty sure it's used in a way similar to 参上, so I'm thinking a more appropriate translation would be "The Hero Appears!!". Thoughts? ――Popfan (talk/contribs) 14:19, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
- From what I know 見参 is a more polite way to say 対面, which does mean "meet". So the title isn't wrong per say. I just feel like the title would be better if there was another word or phrase for meet, like one that you would use to refer to meeting a lord or a king?
Recent name translation updates[edit source]
I was adding the music titles to my patch, and noticed a few changes to music titles:
- The Straits are Merely Calm Once More Today is now Today the Straits Are Merely Calm Once More. Grammatical change for clarity, I assume?
- Illusory Resounding of Military Boots is now Resounding Illusory Sound of Military Boots. Redundant usage of "sound", possibly?
- The Midday Dream Engulfed by Dense Fog is now The Daydream Engulfed by Thick Fog. Is 昼夢 a single word going together meaning "daydream"? I'm not quite sure.
- Burnt Black Wings of Songbirds is now Burning of the Little Birds' Black Wings... what? Seems a pretty significant deviation from the original, but I would like to know more before reverting this.
- Waves and Wind Swaying The Spirits ~ Not Steady Body is now Waves and Wind That Sway the Spirits ~ not steady body. Again, grammatical change... although I'm not too sure if this is necessary or not.
- One Hundred Lives and One Connection ~ Chimera Soul is now One Hundred Lives and One Fate ~ Chimera soul. I think it was established previously by Gilde the translation for 縁 in Shion's themes should be "connection".
- Heaven & Shadow War Record ~ Playing Soldiers is now War Record of Heaven & Shadow ~ Playing soldiers. Another grammatical change, which I'm not sure is really needed anyway.
- The Sprouting Stone Wall, the Moving Castle, Emperor Road ~ So cute!, Let's 'n Go ~ to run away!, Killing Superior ~ Giant killing, Fatal Brilliance ~ Toxic gem, Microcosm ~ Homunculus nightmare, Hands That Can't Reach the Moon ~ Moon Child, and Arch Heaven ~ Spirit of nagara are just simple title capitalization corrections.
I'm not sure if most of the new wordings are improvements to the old ones (I know at least Shion's is inaccurate) and would like to bring it up here first before reverting them. Zenryaku (talk) 00:04, 28 May 2018 (UTC)
Lost reference[edit source]
"小並" at Made in Black ~ Double Snake's comment is shorthand of "小学生並みの感想", an Inmu-originated meme. I can't come up with right translation and notes so I leave this message. --MichaelLabs (talk) 15:02, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
Pun in Iyozane's theme name[edit source]
Something I noticed when listening to the theme on JynX's official channel is that the 幽霊 in 幽霊うごく is read as ゆれ, rather than ゆうれい, making it a pun on 揺れ動く, which may or may not be reflected in the current translation. If Releska or Gilde are still around, I'd be interested to hear what they think. ――Popfan (talk/contribs) 14:16, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
