Fujiwara no Shirogane no Sanra (藤原 銀 讃良) is the Field Marshal of Devanagara's Imperial Military, and the Stage 5 boss of the Brilliant route of Brilliant Pagoda or Haze Castle. They serve under Ooama no Ake no Mitori, and were the former fifth successor to the throne before the coup d'etat.

General Information[edit | edit source]

Personality[edit | edit source]

They are diligent in their work and remain rather stoic to most people around them. However, despite being a field marshal for the Imperial Military, they do not believe in or hold overly uptight codes of conduct with their troops (this is apparently in contrast to Kaoru Kashiwagi). Even in the face of the enemy, they value a fair fight and maintain good sportsmanship regardless of victory or defeat.

Abilities[edit | edit source]

Always hitting their target

Sanra has incredible accuracy, and can always pinpoint when and where to fire at their target.

Background Information[edit | edit source]

Origin[edit | edit source]

Sanra may be loosely based on Empress Jitō, birth name Uno no Sasara (鸕野讚良), the wife and successor of Emperor Tenmu. During Jitō's reign, the imperial capital of Japan was moved from Asuka to Fujiwara-kyō.

Name[edit | edit source]

Their official name is Fujiwara no Shirogane no Sanra (藤原 銀 讃良). The hiragana character no () used between their name to indicate a "belonging"; this was common in ancient Japan for aristocrats to have no between their clan's name and first name. Due to having a double no, the English equivalent of Sanra's name would be "Sanra of Shirogane of Fujiwara" or "Sanra of Fujiwara, the Silver".

Fujiwara (藤原) is a common Japanese surname meaning "wisteria field", and was the name of an influential clan in imperial Japan. Sanra (讃良) is composed of two kanji meaning "praise" (, san) and "good" (, ra). It also uses nearly-identical kanji to "Sasara" (讚良), Empress Jitō's birth name; "" is merely a simplified form of "".

Their middle name, Shirogane (), means "silver", and it is their courtesy name. In Devanagara, those with courtesy names might abbreviate their surname in favour of their courtesy name, thus Sanra can also be referred to as Shirogane no Sanra (銀 讃良).[1]

Design[edit | edit source]

Sanra has white eyes and white hair. They wear green military uniform with a silhouette of what is presumably the Pagoda of the Heavenly Mirror, as well as a black cape. They also wear black and brown combat boots. The hat appears to resemble a peaked cap with an emblem on the front that is a simplified version of the Imperial Military's crest.[2] They also have medals. Noticable, there is an error on their portrait where one of Sanra's eyes is bigger than the other.

Appearances[edit | edit source]

Relationships[edit | edit source]

Fujiwara no Iyozane

Sanra and Iyozane were both members of the Fujiwara clan. it's unknown what was their relationship in the past, but Sanra calls them "Iyo-sama". At Brilliant Pagoda or Haze Castle, Sanra didn't recognize Iyozane (since like most people from the capital, they believed Iyozane was dead) and was shocked upon finding that Iyozane was alive all along.

Ooama no Ake no Mitori

They serve under Mitori as field marshal to the Imperial Military. Before the coup d'état, Sanra was already collaborating with Mitori[3], and probably was on pretty good terms with them. Mitori and Sanra had apparently been "walking the same path since they were young"[4] and both went to military school.[5]

Kaoru Kashiwagi

Sanra and Kaoru are not fond of each other, due to conflicting personalities and ideas on military code. Sanra often mocks the Goefu and sees them as useless, to Kaoru's chagrin.

Additional Information[edit | edit source]

  • They may be a nod to the character Reisen Udongein Inaba, as they both are commonly affiliated with guns and held their hand in a similar gun-like pose.
  • According to JynX, each one of Sanra's medals has a story behind it.[2]

Notes[edit | edit source]

  1. "Cutting the pie" is a technique for moving around corners with a firearm.
  2. Likely a reference to the Colt Frontier Six-Shooter single-action revolver.
  3. Likely a reference to the Colt Python double-action revolver.

The Imperial Capital's Silver Bullet

Fujiwara no Shirogane no Sanra
●Species:
Human
●Abilities:
Something like always hitting their target

The Chief Secretary (Hyoubukyou-no-Miya) of the Ministry of Military Affairs
in the imperial city of Devanagara, and the Imperial Military's field marshal.

In Devanagara, when someone is recognized for a deed of great merit,
they receive a courtesy name from the emperor,
which they insert between their first and last names
and use to identify themselves.

For Sanra's efforts in the coup-d'etat that overthrew the old dynasty,
the new emperor bestowed upon them the courtesy name of "Shirogane", the position
of Military Ministry's Chief Secretary, and the rank of field marshal.

They were originally 5th in line to succeed the throne, and the full general of the Imperial Military.

It's a custom in Devanagara for those with courtesy names
to abbreviate their surname in favor of the courtesy name,
and Sanra too usually goes by just "Shirogane no Sanra".

At present, there are only three people in Devanagara who bear courtesy names.[a]

Notes[edit | edit source]

  1. They are Shirogane no Sanra, Ake no Mitori and perhaps Medias Moritake. Although in Medias' case, "Moritake" is only said to be a kanji name, and not explicitly a courtesy name.
