Spelling of 小枝[edit source]

Trust me, I would have brought this up four years ago if I could, but just because it's late I don't think that means it's no longer worth discussing. As the wiki already acknowledges, the flute carried by Iyozane is based on the flute carried by Taira no Atsumori as told in Heike Monogatari. That flute is generally called "Saeda". For all I know, that spelling was added by later readers to differentiate it from the other 小枝 flute that appears in Heike Monogatari owned by Prince Takakura, but that doesn't really change the fact that the flute owned by Atsumori is known as "Saeda" in both Japanese and English today.

"The flute of Atsumori was one which his grandfather Tadamori, who was a famous player, had received as a present from the Emperor Toba, and had handed down to his father Tsunemori, who has given it to Atsumori because of his skill on the instrument. It was called 'Saeda'." Sadler's translation

"The flute in question is supposed to have been a present from Retired Emperor Toba to Atsumori's grandfather Tadamori, who was an excellent musician. I believe I have heard Tsunemori inherited it, and that he turned it over to Atsumori because the boy played so well. Saeda [Little Branch] was its name." McCullough's translation

"It is said that the flute had first been possessed by Emperor Toba who gave it to Atsumori's grandfather, Tadamori, an excellent player of the instrument. It was then passed down to his son Tsunemori, who in turn gave it to Atsumori, since his surpassing talent on the flute deserved his possession of it. This flute was known as Saeda." Kitagawa's translation.

I guess in the great, grand scheme of things the spelling of Iyozane's flute doesn't particularly matter, and everyone is already used to Koeda, and really without a pronunciation guide we can't say for sure what the intended spelling is, but Saeda does seem more likely, and I felt the need to mention it whether a change is made or not.

I don't see much issue with that. Seems plausible. ― Tony64 (Talk/Con.) 16:28, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
