Appearances

Shion (シオン) is a chimera soul born from the soul-eater flower Harujion. They were officially adopted by the Senri Shrine.

General Information[edit | edit source]

Shion is the final boss of Reactivate Majestical Imperial and a playable character in Brilliant Pagoda or Haze Castle, as well as a possible final boss. Their origin involved the Harujion, a flower from the Outside World that rarely blooms in Mugenri. The few times it appears in Mugenri, only one flower blooms and it needs to absorb the vital energy from all living beings around it to be able to grow up. The flower can be used to create drugs, resurrect the dead or achieve immortality. To prevent this, it is the duty of someone from the Senri Shrine to lumber its sprout down.

Unfortunately, since the priest Tsurubami Senri was away on a mission to the Outside World and didn't warn Yabusame Houlen and Tsubakura Enraku about this, the Harujion bloomed once again without anyone to stop it. The place where the Harujion sprouted this time was the same place where Taira no Fumikado was planning to do their resurrection ceremony. Without Fumikado's knowledge, a great number of souls that they were collecting was absorbed by the flower. Then a great number of dead and alive beings from there were mixed generating a single personality. Even being a spirit, since it possessed much more vital energy than a normal creature, it also had a physical body, thus Shion was born.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Shion is a cheerful and energetic newborn youkai. They are very interested in souls and the aura of others, and judges people's personality based on that (for example, they see that Adagumo no Saragimaru has a green aura, making them straightforward and dutiful; while Kuroji Shitodo has a black disgusting aura). However, they can be surprisingly perceptive and because they are a composite of spirits, they have a vast amount of knowledge and experience, sense of values and preconceptions, purity and wickedness.

Abilities[edit | edit source]

Absorbing one's spirit and self

This is the ability that enables them to manipulate ghosts and spirits, an ability they possess because they were born from the Harujion, the flower that feeds from spirits. As shown in-game, Shion can absorb spirits and use them as a life source.

Soul-related abilities

Shion has a number of abilities related to the soul. For example, they can detect a soul's scent and color, through which they can learn about a person's personality and qualities[1]; and are able to tell when someone is lying. Shion also has three ghost-like entities called Id, Es and Superego, which aid them in battle. In addition, Shion can talk to the spirits they are composed of.[2]

Background Information[edit | edit source]

Origin[edit | edit source]

Their character may be a homage to Yuyuko Saigyouji - both are final bosses, have similar colour palettes, have carefree personalities and are tied to a spirit-consuming plant, which provoked a long winter. They're also both gluttonous and despite their ditzy tendencies, sometimes display an extraordinary level of knowledge.

Name[edit | edit source]

As they had no name upon birth, they go by their given nickname Shion (シオン). Since they were born from the Harujion, Yabusame Houlen derived their new name from it. They initially referred to themselves as simply "I", but eventually started referring to themselves in third-person as Shion.

According to JynX, "Shion" is written as "死宛" in Chinese[3], which is a phonetic translation of Shion. means "to die" or "inactive", while means "as if" or "crooked", and can act as a surname.

Design[edit | edit source]

Shion is short in height, shorter than Sukune Katano as shown in the endings, and has pink hair and eyes. They're barefooted and wear a sleeveless white haori.

According to JynX, the projections coming out of Shion's back are souls, and the fact that they take on the forms of insects and plants shows that Shion is more than an aggregate of human souls, but the souls of other creatures as well. While the projections vary from appearance to appearance, one constant is the purple hitaikakushi on their head, reflecting Shion's status as a living being born from the souls of the deceased. In their RMI appearance, they have a pair of butterfly wings, a cat's ear, a bunch of grapes on a vine, a human hand, and two types of flowers.

Appearances[edit | edit source]

Shion in RMI
Reactivate Majestical Imperial

In Reactivate Majestical Imperial, because the Harujion flower sprouted in a grove next to Taira no Fumikado's resurrection ceremony, it absorbed all the spirits and because of the influence of the Mugenri Barrier, most of them were evil and vengeful spirits. Thus, a new youkai was born, and after developing a personality, they continue to recollects spirits for the Harujion to bloom, resulting in the long winter and the increasing number of ghosts.

Yabusame Houlen and Tsubakura Enraku reach the Withered Grove. They only find the Harujion, so Tsubakura asks aloud if someone else is there. When they receive no answer, they try to go away only to be stopped by Shion. Realizing that this is a newborn youkai, Yabusame names them Shion, based on the Harujion's name. Shion can sense people's minds by smelling them, and is particularly interested in Tsubakura because of their blank, neutral soul, wanting to consume it. Realizing that the Harujion was causing the long winter, the heroes fight Shion in a danmaku duel.

In the end, Yabusame and Tsubakura return to the Senri Shrine, bringing Shion with them, much to Jinbei's chagrin. Shion eats some of Tsubakura's soul (lifespan), but they don't care much about it and brushes off Jinbei's concerns.

Adagumo no Yaorochi and Sukune Katano reach the Withered Grove, where they find a tiny newborn youkai sleeping next to a mysterious big flower. They wake up upon sensing them and comments about the smell of their souls, but Sukune misunderstood it and gets offended. Yaorochi demands Shion to introduce themself, which they do, saying that they were born from the Harujion and the massive amount of spirits it consumed. Yaorochi and Sukune realize that this happened because Yabusame and Tsubakura were not told to uproot the Harujion, a task that Tsurubami Senri did while still in Mugenri. Shion expresses interest in eating Yaorochi's soul and they fight.

In the end, Yaorochi and Sukune return to the Senri Shrine, with Shion following them. Shion declares that they are interested in the essence of the shrine and stays there.

Kuroji Shitodo and Adagumo no Saragimaru reach the Withered Grove, where they find a sleeping Shion. They are discussing if to attack the sleeping youkai or not, but Shion wakes up anyway. Shion smells their souls and calls Saragimaru's hard-working and Kuroji's disgusting. Kuroji is more interested in the Harujion and decides to cut it in order to sell it for a large sum of money. Shion does not allow them to do that, and both fight.

In the end, Kuroji and Saragimaru return to the Senri Shrine, with Shion following them. Shion declares that they are interested in the essence of the shrine and stays there.

After the events of Reactivate Majestical Imperial, Shion was sealed into the Senri Shrine by Jinbei. Kuroji tells Tsubakura and Yabusame about some rumours of "The Heaven divides the mirror". Tsubakura mistakes the terms and believes it will rain sake, so they go with Yabusame on a quest to get free sake. Jinbei, sensing an incident, frees Shion from their seal in order to assist Tsubakura and Yabusame. Shion is more interested in consuming the souls of the opponents they came across, though.

Relationships[edit | edit source]

Tsubakura Enraku & Yabusame Houlen

Generally, Shion is on friendly terms with Tsubakura Enraku and Yabusame Houlen. Shion becomes very attached to Tsubakura, after noticing that they have a neutral soul and wants to consume it. Tsubakura dislikes Shion's clingy and childish attitude and considers them an annoyance, much like Yabusame. Yabusame was the one who gave them a name and both get along because they have a similar ditzy personality, although they still get annoyed at how Shion butts in their conversations and clinginess towards Tsubakura.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  1. Eros and thanatos are the innate drive towards life and death, respectively, in psychoanalysis.
  2. The id is the base, instinctual part of the mind in psychoanalysis. "Es" is the German word for the id, or may also be read as "S", short for "super-ego", which is the learned "conscience" of the subconscious, opposing the id.
  3. The super-ego is the part of the subconscious mind in psychoanalysis that stems from cultural values and learned experiences, and serves as a conscience.
  4. 4.0 4.1 A reference to the alleged feral child Victor of Aveyron.
  5. A pun on Tsubakura's spell card "Monochrome Ray", as both spell cards are pronounced in the same way in Japanese.

〇 Stage 6 Boss — An Individual Born from the Aggregate

Shion

Species: Chimera soul
Ability: Something like absorbing one's spirit and self

"Harujion", the Philadelphia fleabane.
This flower is a type of plant found everywhere outside, but only a single one of it exists in Mugenri.
This flower blooms only one time in a random place once every several years,
but it needs to absorb the vital energy from all of the living beings around it in order to bloom.
The flower bloomed from the "Harujion" has an aberrant kind of vital energy,
and it is said that if you use this flower can be used as a raw material to create drugs to resurrect fallen ones or to obtain immortality.
To prevent someone from misusing this flower or using it for malicious purposes,
someone from the Senri Shrine always chops its sprout down before it blooms.

However, the "Harujion", which grows by absorbing large amounts of vital energy,
miraculously happened to sprout at the same place where Fumikado was planning to do their resurrection ceremony.
Fumikado's gang, ignorant of what the flower was, had the great number of souls they collected absorbed by the flower.
Then the great number of dead souls and living beings were mixed together, generating a single personality.

As it had much more vital energy than a normal creature,
it had a physical body despite being a soul.

This being had a vast amount of knowledge and experience,
senses of values and preconceptions, and both innocence and wickedness.
In its first moments, it didn't have a fixed shape, but, bit by bit, it started to split itself,
where the "good" side of them created their flesh while the "bad" side gave shape to their spirit.

With that, it should have naturally become a kind of neutral existence.
However, due to the nature of the Mugenri Barrier, the majority of the gathered souls were, at the very least, unable to firmly assert themselves as "good".
Thus the bad section of them occupied most of their entire existence,
and a great portion of their spiritually bad part was able to dominate their flesh and started to overflow from their body.

Optimism, pessimism, subjective opinions, objective opinions, materialism, idealism,
common theories, controversial theories, paradoxes and a many other values were talking in Shion's head.
The concert hall that is Shion's thought
was dominated by noises like those from a construction site.

However, a good number of these voices were playing the same melody in unison,
that "The world is full of malice."
The souls within Shion, whether humans, animals or plants...
Many of them grieved this fact.

Therefore, Shion had no doubt about that claim.

After all, their own body, a miniature copy of the world,
is malice itself.

Something like absorbing one's spirit and self

A living(?) being who's settled down in the Senri Shrine.

The staple food that they live off of is Tsubakura Enraku's soul,
but they also capture the minds and life force of various other organisms along the way.

They were born during a previous incident,
but because they'd leave a massive trail of comatose victims in their wake if left alone,
they're now being protected (and kept custody of) in the Senri Shrine.

They can't get out of the shrine very easily, and have way too much free time.

Perhaps because they're always nibbling on Tsubakura's soul,
they can use a tiny portion of Tsubakura's power.
