Appearances

Shou Amanomori (雨杏 宵, Amanomori Shou) is a childish slug youkai who is friends with Jun Amanomiya. Living in the Unlost Woods of Mugenri, they are the second stage boss of Earthen Miraculous Sword and Brilliant Pagoda or Haze Castle, the second and fourth game of the Len'en Project respectively.

General Information[edit | edit source]

Shou was born in the area around the Gloomy Strait, but later moved to the Sanctuary, attracted by the lush greenery and clear water. As a sea slug youkai, they require water to survive and regularly intakes water to weather the drier climates of the Sanctuary during summer and winter.[1]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Their personality is somewhat childish, and they often throw tantrums in an attempt to make it rain. They often go around with Jun Amanomiya, because Jun is a rain youkai and Shou can induce their own ability on Jun as they please.

Because they are a slug youkai, they have many of the characteristics of a slug. If you throw salt on them, they'll get a little bigger, but then they'll die. The tracks they leave when walking around barefoot are slimy and purple. Despite that, they're still essentially a bug and are often regarded as such by other characters.

Abilities[edit | edit source]

Inducing rain

As a sea slug youkai, they enjoy rain and water, but they themself are unable to make it rain. However, they apparently successfully induce rain when they are bullied.[1] Because of this ability, they live near people who do have power over rain. Jun Amanomiya can cause rain even though they hate it, so it's implied that during those times, they're under Shou's ability.

Background Information[edit | edit source]

Origin[edit | edit source]

Shou is based on sea slugs, specifically, the sea hare (anaspidea). They are called amefurashi (雨虎/雨降) in Japanese, which translates to "rain tiger" or "rainfall", named so as it was believed that sea hares could bring rain, as referenced in Shou's ability. Their eggs are called umisoumen or umizoumen (海素麺), lit. sea soumen, due to their noodle-like appearance and were eaten in times of famine, although they are rarely eaten in Japan nowadays as they are not very delicious and food poisoning is common. Nowadays, umisoumen typically refers to red algae, which is a completely separate organism. Nevertheless, this was referenced in Shou's theme, "Slimy Umizoumen ~ Act the FOOL HAHAHA".

Name[edit | edit source]

Their full name is Shou Amanomori (雨杏 宵). Their given name, Shou (), means "evening". Their family name, 雨杏 (Amanomori), contains the kanji 雨 (ama), meaning rain, and 杏 (mori), meaning apricot.

Design[edit | edit source]

Shou is short in height and has short green hair. They dress in white and brown clothing, and their hat contains numerous slug-shaped ornaments. Their eyes are light brown in Earthen Miraculous Sword, but green in Brilliant Pagoda or Haze Castle, to which JynX states that "It's the difference between caramel flavor and basil flavor" as an excuse.[2]

Appearances[edit | edit source]

Earthen Miraculous Sword
Shou in EMS

After Jun is defeated and humiliated by the heroes, Shou vows to avenge their fallen friend and decides to ambush the heroes in the Unlost Woods.

Brilliant Pagoda or Haze Castle

Shou's reason for attacking the protagonists varies in function of which team is selected.

Shou quickly faces the trio, asking them what kind of harm they have done to Jun again. Tsubakura claims they don't recall, but regardless, Shou attempts to avenge Jun, but is quickly defeated.

Shou tells the imperial trio how they have been told that if they defeat someone, they would be rewarded a slug slave. Fumikado tells them that they'll 'give them a hundred' only to get told by Iyozane they don't have that many at their disposition. Shou decides then to challenge the three in a fight so they can get their slug, only to get swiftly defeated.

Relationships[edit | edit source]

Jun Amanomiya

Jun Amanomiya, a rain youkai, is Shou's best friend. Shou stays close to them, because as a slug-youkai, they love rain. Everytime Jun gets attacked for no reason, Shou goes to take revenge on the attackers.

Kujiru Kesa

It's stated in Kujiru's official profile that they know Shou Amanomori. After discovering that Shou is a similar slug youkai as well, Kujiru was pleased and considered persuading them to join the Dragonfly Army due to needing an addition to their own work-field[3], sending them invitations and chasing them around despite Shou rejecting said invitations. Kujiru sometimes even manages to trick and manipulate Shou into doing their biding much to Shou's chagrin (with Kujiru being referred as a weirdo in Shou's official profile[4]).

Notes[edit | edit source]

  1. Ubagai is a type of clam.
  2. Columbiad is a kind of cannon that was often used by the American army for coastal defense during the 19th century.
  3. This is a Japanese expression which is equivalent to the English phrase "slow but steady wins the race". Fitting for a slug.
  4. The name of this card is almost identical to the Easy mode version, but the spelling is slightly different.
  5. A Japanese expression that refers to certain objects or phenomena showing up or occurring one after another, but is often misused to refer to the quick speed in which something grows or happens.
  6. A reference to the comedic Japanese kyōgen play "Bamboo Shoot" (竹の子), in which two owners of a field and a grove respectively fight over the bamboo shoots growing in the field. "Princess from the Grove" is specifically a reference to the tale of Kaguya-hime, specifically to how she was found as an infant inside a bamboo shoot.
  7. Amagoi Komachi (literally Pray for Rain Komachi) is a legend about the poet Ono no Komachi, in which she writes a poem that brings down rain.

〇 Stage 2 Boss — Walking Lubricant

Shou Amanomori

Species: Monster Sea Slug
Ability: Something like inducing rain

They're a species that enjoys rain and water, but they're unable to make it rain themself.
Because of that, they live near people who do have power over rain,
and you can often see them throwing a tantrum in an attempt to make it rain.
If you throw salt on them, they'll get a little bigger, but then they'll die.
They're really slug-like, huh.
They often go around with a certain rain youkai around here.

The tracks they leave when walking around barefoot are slimy and purple.
If you put that in with miso soup and water with a 1:2 ratio it'll bring out the soup's appetizing smell,
and the soup will become more viscous and rich in flavor. (Contributed by Tsubakura Enraku)

Something like inducing rain

They're like a slug but not quite a slug.
They need rain to survive and
they depend on various others for it,
but they can often be seen clinging onto "Jun Amanomiya" in particular.

They've been receiving invitations from some weirdo lately,
and keep getting chased around despite turning them down.
They still take bait from the person inviting them sometimes,
though, and are manipulated into doing stuff in return.
